Substance use and overdose deaths
Oklahoma has higher rates of substance use than many other states.
Nearly 20% of adult Oklahomans reported illicit drug use in the last month. Prevalence of substance use disorder was high, relative to other states.

Reported use of many illicit substances has increased in the past decade.
Methamphetamine use, in particular, was dramatically above national averages, with 1.6% of adult Oklahomans reporting use in the past year.

Note: The pattern change after 2018-2019 data exists because estimates for 2021-2022 cannot be compared to estimates from previous years due to changes in NSDUH survey methodology. Historical data for select measures are unavailable because they were newly added to the NSDUH in recent years.
Overdose deaths among Oklahomans have risen sharply since 2019.
This “fourth wave” of the opioid epidemic is driven largely by overdoses of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
